Comparison is the Thief of Joy

If you have spent time in our studio, chances are you have been encouraged to listen to your body and move in a way that best serves you. It is also likely that you have never heard us compare your movement to the person on the Mat or Pilates Reformer next to you.

And that is intentional because Pilates is a deeply personal practice. Every one of us has our own unique body and circumstances. And those factors change within ourselves constantly. The body you bring to the mat today will feel different than the one you bring to the mat tomorrow. And it will always be different than the community member moving on the mat next to you.

And that is perfectly fine. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

If you are recovering from an injury or a sleepless night, you need your practice more than ever! But you may not be able to access your balance or flexibility in the same way that you could when you were well rested or injury free.

Comparing yourself to another community member will not serve you or your movement. Focus on yourself and what you want and need from the movement. Your experience will be more joyful, effective, and fulfilling as a result.

We are here to support your movement practice in all the ways that are unique to you. Have there been any changes that impact how your body moves or feels? Respond to this email and let us know. Together, we can help you find movement that is infused with joy and perfectly beneficial to your unique self.

With Love and Light,
